Discover the Traditional Canal Art of the past lovingly recreated in the present. Our canal Art is the result of extensive research into the history of this art form, and the Master Craftsmen of the past who have left us with a priceless heritage. Without their contribution this tradition, unique to the canal system would have been lost forever. It is this tradition that we are trying to preserve.

Traditionally the Buckby Can, for carrying water, was decorated with Roses and Castles. Either the owner's name or the boat name featured on the centre band. Every element, including the colours used on the decorative detail is traditional. Each element exists within a framework, a space to be filled. Styles differed from artist to artist and also geographical location but the traditional elements remain constant.

The Narrow boat society of the past, transformed every-day functional articles into works of art that reflected their personal dignity and their pride in their boats, which were also their homes.

The style used on our canal Ware follows the tradition that predominated in the Midlands, the heart of the canal system. The Roses and Castles are influenced by the simplicity of the brush strokes of Frank Nurser 1886-1952, from Braunston and the realism of Bill Hodgson 1878-1957 from Crewe in Cheshire Originally the artists, many of whom are still unknown,

The cabin stools, of varying designs, try to replicate those originally in the Boatman's Cabin and are hand crafted involving many processes and hours of research. The artefacts of the past were not mass produced but individually hand painted, with attention to the traditional detailed elements, it is this tradition that we are trying to keep alive.
